Program Agenda

9-9:30am –  Summit checkin; visit with youth artwork

Our host for Summit logistics, St. Louis Chinese Language School, provides hot beverages and breakfast pastries as guests check-in for the conference.  After check-in, we encourage participants to visit with the art exhibit, themed “AAPI Solidarity for Mental Health Awareness”, curated by student artists Grace Dai & Ammu Zentangle.


9:30-9:45 am – Welcome to Summit Attendees

Dr. Min Liu, co-founder of AACS, and Dr. Hemla Singaravelu, both program co-director of the mental health initiative, will welcome the speakers and participants, and provide an overview of the summit.


9:45-10:15 am –  Keynote Presentation by Dr. Stanislaus

Dr. Angeline Stanislaus, Chief Medical Director of the Missouri Department of Mental Health, serves as the department’s senior clinical leader by providing advice and counsel to the department director regarding a broad range of clinical policy, programmatic and strategic issues. Dr. Stanislaus will share remarks from decades of clinical, administrative, and community-based work on mental health, with a focus on unique needs of AAPI communities in the Midwest. 


10:15-11 am – Breakout Session
Breakout A/Parents and Caring Adults: Community Best Practices for Promoting Mental Health.  Facilitated by Jade Gu, this panel invites community leaders major St. Louis area AAPI community organizations, including faith leaders from Buddhist, Christian, and Hindu organizations, and leaders of major language and cultural institutions, to have a discussion about community norms about mental health, needs and resources for promoting youth wellbeing, and opportunities for programmatic collaborations. 

Panelists include: Dr. Sudhir Brahmbhatt, President of Bal Vihar of St. Louis; Julia Sim, Principal of Korea Academy of St. Louis; Kristina Le, President of St. Louis Vietnamese Community Association; Venerable Jue Huang, Director of St. Louis Foguangshan Buddhist Center

Breakout B/Youth.  This panel features speakers from In-Between of WashU, Uncle Joe of WashU, and Zhenni (Jennie) Wang of the WashU Center for Counseling and Psychological Services.  Facilitated by Esther Wang, this panel engages youth participants in a discussion about unique mental health challenges for AAPI college students, and explores coping strategies that are important for youth and family members. 


11-11:15 am – Tea break


11:15- 12 pm – Social-emotional Learning: How It Promotes Resilience in Youth.  A Dialogue with Dr. Neha Navsaria and AACS Mental Health Initiative Youth Advocates

Dr. Neha Navsaria shares her expertise in social and emotional development in early childhood, parenting and AAPI mental health, in this focused dialogue about social-emotional learning from an AAPI parenting perspective. Dr. Navsaria’s presentation will be followed with a dialogue with AACS Mental Health Initiative’s youth advocates and parent representatives. The conversation will focus on what promoting social emotional development entails on an individual, family, and community level for our AAPI youth.


12 to 1 pm – AAPI & Mental Health docu-series episode.  Presented by Aisha Sultan.  Post screening response provided by Dr. Hemla Singavarelu


12 to 12:30 pm –  Box lunch is served


1-1:45 pm – Connecting AAPIs to Mental Health Resources

This panel features existing community-level programs that have an established record of successfully connecting individuals in times of need to the appropriate mental health resources.  We invite each program to share their various resources with the summit attendees, and welcome a discussion of how the programs could better understand and serve the needs of AAPIs.
